There is a particular focus on the intern\u2019s roles and responsibilities which is followed by a video clip of an intern introducing himself to a client. To inform them about those responsibilities, it may be helpful to distribute guidelines (e.g. during orientation). Here are some general guidelines that pertain to observation and confidentiality as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>General Expectations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The student should:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be a dynamic learner and take responsibility for his or her learning experiences within the parameters set by the academic program and the field\/clinical site.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Comply with the site&#8217;s policies and procedures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Keep the supervisor informed of all relevant matters: difficulties encountered, planned interventions, outcomes, and so on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Read relevant documents provided by the field\/clinical site.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Promptly seek needed help from the proper source.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Read up on the population served by the field\/clinical site.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Notify the supervisor upon going home at day&#8217;s end or leaving the department or unit for any length of time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Be willing to stay a little later than planned in case of emergency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"caption\">Derived from Desrosiers et al. (1997)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Observation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The student should:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Arrive on time for the observation period, even if not moderating the session.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Address the client<sup>1<\/sup> in a professional manner (indicating that he or she is a student and request permission to observe.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Observe the entire clinical session; stay until the end.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Refrain from performing other tasks (e.g. writing a report) during an observation session, unless the supervisor has given permission.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Always respect the patient&#8217;s right to confidentiality (see &#8220;Confidentiality&#8221; below).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Discuss the client in private with the clinician or person supervising the task at hand.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Refrain from disrupting the session or distracting the supervisor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Refrain from contradicting or arguing with the supervisor in front of the client; discuss any disagreements after the session.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Improve his or her observation skills: observe not only the supervisor&#8217;s skills and attitudes, but also the client&#8217;s reactions, behaviours, signs and symptoms, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Take observation notes about each client.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Prepare questions to ask the supervisor after the observation session.<\/li>\n<li>Prepare for a case discussion with the supervisor, who may ask for hypotheses about the type of disorder the client has or offer suggestions about the next stage of treatment, for example.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"caption\">Derived from Hegde &amp; Davis (1999)<\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li>We use the term &#8220;client&#8221; to mean patient and beneficiary as well.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Confidentiality<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Communication<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The student should:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\nDiscuss the client<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>using the client&#8217;s name only in discussions with the supervisor and the care staff directly involved or during clinical meetings (if really necessary).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\nRefrain from discussing the client<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>with other persons not associated with the field\/clinical site;<\/li>\n<li>in public places (e.g. cafeteria or elevator).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Refrain from mentioning the client&#8217;s name during classroom presentations or online communication (e.g. discussion forum).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>Files, Clinical Information and Records<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The student should:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Comply with field\/clinical site policy regarding access to clinical files and reports (check-out and return).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Follow field\/clinical site rules on the disclosure of clinical information.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Refrain from leaving patient reports, care or treatment plans and other written material unattended.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Refrain from taking clinical files home or removing pieces of information from them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Obtain the client&#8217;s written consent before taping (video or audio) or photographing him or her.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"caption\">Derived from Hegde &amp; Davis (1999)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Video Clip: The Role of the Intern<\/h3>\n<div style=\"width: 348px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('video');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-80-1\" width=\"348\" height=\"304\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/mcgillclinicaleducation.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/role_of_intern.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/mcgillclinicaleducation.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/role_of_intern.mp4\">https:\/\/mcgillclinicaleducation.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/role_of_intern.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<h3>Let&#8217;s Discuss<\/h3>\n<p>What are your thoughts about an intern&#8217;s roles and responsibilities?
